Fashion Magazines: The Most Influential Editors

Popular in the West, Forbes magazine likes to entertain its readers with a variety of publications, lists and “top tens”: from the most influential business ladies and most useful food – up to lists of the most stylish stars and sexual models.
The next “list from Forbes” includes the names of the most influential editors published in the U.S. fashion magazines, which we’d like to present to your attention.
Making this “top ten” were considered editors of each of the monthly issued American fashion magazine – including publications for teenagers.
Specialists used the statistics on the number of references to each of the magazines in the media and the Internet, the number of visitors to websites of these magazines.

1
They also considered advertising revenues for the first half of 2009, as well as the number of advertisement pages and circulation data for the first half of 2009. All these data were compared with the statistics for the last year – in general, making “top ten” of fashion editors in Forbes was taken seriously.
2We’d like to start representing this list from the 10th place. So this list closes Ann Shauket, head of publications for teens, Seventeen. Ann moved one place down this year, but this drop is not as painful as compared to Amy Westley, editor of Teen Vogue’s, who disappeared from this list.
The ninth place has been occupied by Joanna Coles, editor of Marie Claire. Joanna popularized her magazine, hiring for Judge Nina Garcia for the position of fashion editor of Project Runway, and agreed to shoot a reality show “Running in Heels” in the magazine. In addition, Marie Claire funds the sixth season of Runway Project on Lifetime channel.
Kate White, the editor of Cosmopolitan, is only on the eighth place in the “top ten” from Forbes. This magazine reduced the number of advertisement pages by 20 per cent and 15.8 per cent decline in revenue from advertising.
Ariel Foksmen, who was appointed managing editor of InStyle in September 2008 is a newcomer in this list. She is 8th due to an increase in the number of InStyle magazine advertisement pages per year.
Sixth place went to Glenda Bailey, editor of Harper’s Bazaar. In the last years of its history this magazine could not3boast of high profits, and it reduced advertising sales for the first half of 2009 by 22.9 per cent. However, Glenda, along with editor of special projects of Harper’s Bazaar, has appeared as a judge at the Fashion Show and a series of competitions. In this way they could not only increase the interest in publishing, but also became popular among media-persons.
Fifth place of “top ten” got Linda Wells, editor of Allure. Allure reduced advertising sales in the first half of 2009 by 28 percent.
But despite this, Linda Wells made tremendous online progress: number of visitors Allure.com in 2009 has been increased in comparison with 2008.

4The 4th place went to another newcomer of this year, former editor of Marie Claire, Lesley Jane Seymour. In 2008, she founded the magazine More for women over forty.
So, it’s time to represent the most influential fashion editors according to Forbes.
“Bronze” (third place) was taken by vice-president and editor in chief of Elle, Robert Myers. He deals with television shows (such as The Hills on MTV) which has contributed to the rising popularity of the magazine. In July 2009 Elle.com was visited by two million users, up to 83 per cent more than during the same period in 2008.
“Silver” (second place) went to editor of Glamour Sindi Leiv. Attendance of the site5Glamour.com has significantly increased compared with last year. In addition, Cindy’s name was second in the number of references in the media.
And, of course, “Gold” went to, inimitable Anna Wintour who once again won all the fashion editors. Chief editor of American Vogue is first in this list: her magazine has the biggest increase in circulation from year to year.
Anna Wintour also took part in creation of the documentary movie “The September Issue” and global event called Fashion’s Night Out.
Anna Wintour is one of the most influential women, as in the formation of fashion and style, and in the 200-billion retail industry of accessories and clothing.
